Chrystia Freeland Resigns from Cabinet, Appointed Special Envoy for Ukraine

Chrystia Freeland has announced her resignation from Cabinet, stepping down from her role as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. She confirmed she will not seek re-election and will instead serve as Canada’s special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a newly created diplomatic position outside of Cabinet. Freeland emphasized that while she is leaving her ministerial duties, she will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament.

A political career spanning more than a decade

Her departure marks a major transition after more than ten years in senior political roles. Freeland previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and Foreign Affairs Minister under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. She returned to Cabinet earlier this year after losing the Liberal leadership race to Prime Minister Mark Carney. Reflecting on her decision, she said she was leaving “with tremendous gratitude and a little sadness” as she closes this chapter of her political life.

Carney praises Freeland’s leadership

Prime Minister Carney praised Freeland’s “versatility, raw intelligence, and principled leadership.” He highlighted that her Ukrainian heritage and extensive international experience make her well suited to support Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts at a critical time.

Cabinet changes following her resignation

  • Dominic LeBlanc will take over Internal Trade responsibilities.
  • Steven MacKinnon will assume the Transport portfolio.

Freeland’s exit represents both the end of an era in Canadian politics and the beginning of a new international role. As Canada’s envoy for Ukraine’s reconstruction, she is expected to play a pivotal part in advancing Canada’s diplomatic and humanitarian commitments abroad.
