Kelowna has received two provincial climate action awards at the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference, recognizing its leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable urban development. City officials said the awards highlight years of planning and investment in making Kelowna more resilient to climate change.

Innovative Policies Driving Recognition

Kelowna’s award-winning initiatives include:

  • Expanding cycling and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Adopting energy-efficient building standards
  • Promoting greener transportation options for residents
  • Investing in renewable energy projects
  • Advancing waste reduction strategies

Officials emphasized that these steps not only benefit the environment but also contribute to a healthier, more livable community for residents.

Balancing Growth with Sustainability

Local environmental groups praised the recognition, noting Kelowna has shown how mid-sized cities can lead on climate action. Still, they stressed that challenges remain, particularly around housing development, wildfire resilience, and transit integration.

City leaders expressed confidence that by maintaining momentum, Kelowna will continue on its path toward long-term sustainability and climate resilience.
