Russia Drone Incursion Into Poland Escalates Regional Tensions

During a massive overnight Russian air assault on Ukraine, at least 19 military drones penetrated Polish airspace through Belarus, prompting a rare direct engagement by a NATO ally. Polish Air Force units, supported by NATO fighter jets from the Netherlands, Italy, and others, successfully shot down several drones—including at least eight confirmed downed aircraft—with a fourth likely destroyed. Airports in Warsaw, Rzeszów, and Lublin were temporarily closed as defensive operations unfolded. The incident marked the first time a NATO country engaged Russian military assets during the Ukraine war.

Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO Charter, triggering emergency consultations with alliance members. Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the drone incursions “a large-scale provocation” and stated the country was closer to military conflict than at any point since World War II. Debris from downed drones landed in several eastern and central regions, including one drone partially damaging a residential home.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the action “reckless and escalatory,” emphasizing that it highlights the urgent need to intensify pressure on Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine. Canada reaffirmed its commitment to NATO and support for Ukraine amid growing concerns over war spillover.
