What to Expect as BC Conservatives Take Power with Lorne Doerkson
BC Premier-designate Lorne Doerkson names Kim Henderson to lead transition following a Conservative supermajority win. Read about government plans.
Williams Lake MLA Steps Into Top Role Following Election Victory
Lorne Doerkson, an MLA from Williams Lake, B.C., is stepping into the province’s highest political role after leading the B.C. Conservatives to a major election victory. Speaking after the results, Doerkson addressed rural and northern B.C. residents directly, noting it has been a long time since a premier hailed from their region and promising they “will never be an afterthought” under his leadership.
The party secured an overwhelming majority, winning or leading in 64 of the legislature’s 93 seats, backed by roughly 48 per cent of the popular vote. In contrast, the outgoing NDP secured about 27 seats with 37 per cent of the vote, prompting NDP Leader David Eby to resign his post despite retaining his seat in Vancouver-Point Grey. Eby’s decision to trigger an election two years early stands as a historical political miscalculation. The Green Party captured two seats, with leader Emily Lowan elected on Vancouver Island, securing 11 per cent of the popular vote. Voter turnout was approximately 48 per cent, with 1.8 million ballots cast across B.C.
Transition Team Formed with Economic and Healthcare Mandates
Moving rapidly to organize his government, Doerkson appointed Kim Henderson to direct his transition team. Henderson, who previously served over a decade as deputy minister and head of the B.C. public service under former Liberal premiers Christy Clark and Gordon Campbell, is taking on the unpaid volunteer role while on leave from her post as interim vice-president at Trans Mountain Corp.
Doerkson stressed the urgency of the transition so his administration can “hit the ground running” once sworn in. Among the government’s immediate priorities are conducting an independent audit of B.C.’s finances, establishing a commission aimed at maintaining operational emergency rooms, and finalizing a plan for tax relief once the legislature opens.
Interprovincial Relations and Federal Attention
Identifying ongoing U.S. trade friction as the primary economic risk facing British Columbia, Doerkson plans early discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to reactivate a working group on the Pacific Link pipeline. The Conservative victory also drew comment from U.S. President Donald Trump, who noted on social media that the party had achieved a provincial victory for the first time in nearly a century.

B.C. Conservative Victory Triggers Need for Constitutional Rule Change
B.C. Conservatives win a majority government, but need a two-thirds party vote to change constitutional rules and keep interim leader Lorne Doerkson.
Majority Victory Creates Leadership Governance Hurdle
British Columbia voters delivered a two-thirds majority government to the B.C. Conservatives on Saturday, but the party must now amend its own internal constitution so premier-designate Lorne Doerkson can permanently remain leader.
Under existing party regulations, an interim leader is barred from running for the permanent position in a subsequent ballot. Overturning that restriction requires a two-thirds vote among party members.
Party Leadership Addresses Transition Details
Doerkson stepped into the interim leadership role days prior to the Sept. 22 snap election call by outgoing NDP Premier David Eby, ending nearly 10 years of NDP governance. On Sunday, Doerkson addressed the constitutional requirement directly, dismissing concerns that it would prevent him from serving as premier.
“I am leader and that’s an administrative detail that there’ll be more information on that imminently,” Doerkson said, adding that he will stay on as party leader and describing the election results as “decisive.”
The party’s board posted on social media Sept. 23 that a premier selected by voters deserves certainty, stating that an amendment will be pursued to secure his leadership.
Party Support and Ideological Shift
Support for Doerkson remains strong internally. Party candidate Caroline Elliott, who won the West Vancouver-Capilano riding on Saturday, endorsed him fully, noting he earned the trust of the province and united the party following the sudden resignation of former leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay shortly before the election.
Former B.C. premier Gordon Campbell also voiced support during election night, describing Doerkson as a straightforward leader capable of guiding the province forward.
The B.C. Conservatives have seen a rapid political transformation. After capturing under two per cent of the vote in 2020, the collapse of B.C. United opened the path for their rise. Political scientist Hamish Telford noted that while a portion of the party base previously sought to distance itself from former B.C. Liberals, Doerkson—who represented the Cariboo-Chilcotin riding as a B.C. Liberal in 2020 before joining the Conservatives—now leads a mainstream, business-oriented government.

Why B.C. Voters Handed Conservatives a Majority and Turned Away From the NDP
B.C. Conservatives win a majority government under Lorne Doerkson as the NDP suffers a historic drop in voter turnout following a snap election call.
Voter Turnout Drops as Conservatives Secure Near-Record Support
In the 2026 British Columbia provincial election, the Conservative Party gained nearly 50 per cent of the total vote, securing the second-largest caucus in provincial history. The victory puts former small-business owner and interior MLA Lorne Doerkson on track to serve as the province’s 38th premier. Meanwhile, the incumbent B.C. NDP experienced its worst election night in a quarter-century, seeing its vote tallies drop by more than 25 per cent compared to 2024—falling from just under 950,000 votes to below 700,000. Total support for the Conservative Party held relatively steady near 900,000, while Green Party turnout increased slightly by about 20,000 votes.
Snap Election Call Triggered Public Backlash
The political shift followed a controversial decision by outgoing Premier David Eby on Sept. 22, 2026, to initiate a snap election despite maintaining a majority in the legislature. Eby acknowledged public discontent over the decision, stating, “People were very surprised and frustrated by the election call. I should have done a better job of letting them know how stalled out the legislature was.” Despite campaign strategy shifts addressing wealth taxes, political opponents, and international leaders, voters remained dissatisfied with the early call, leaving the NDP unable to overcome the backlash.
Conservative Alignment and Policy Uncertainty
Doerkson, who assumed interim leadership of the Conservatives on Sept. 20 after returning from a trip to Africa, managed to lead a unified party through the five-week campaign. Former B.C. Liberal organizers took charge of operations, steering campaign strategy toward economic messaging and Doerkson’s Williams Lake business background while benching controversial figures. Despite criticism from NDP organizers regarding Doerkson’s media availability and past statements made by Conservative team members, the party successfully united former caucus members. With the election concluding a historic shift, the incoming Conservative administration faces upcoming decisions regarding its specific policy agenda for British Columbia.
